"ART FESTIVAL DRAWS CROWDS"

Published: May 13, 2009

"The sunny skies were a welcome sight to members of the Brandon '86 Rotary Club, sponsors of the Winthrop Art Festival May 1-3. Hundreds of locals attended the fair, where more than 75 artists and vendors exhibited their wares. Booth fees generated more than $26,000 earmarked for a dozen local charities and $7,000 for artist awards.

The works on display ran the gamut from elegant oil paintings and cast bronze sculptures to tropical-style wooden signs inscribed with clever sayings and handmade goat's milk soaps.

Trent Manning of Winter Haven won Best of Show and $3,000 for his mixed-media works created largely from salvaged materials. Dan Balk of Brandon garnered an honorable mention for his intricate handmade jewelry, and Rick Sanders of Riverview received the Award of Merit for his collection of oil paintings depicting the interaction between species, ideas and environments."
